Founded under Swedish rule, Kuopio is Northern Savonia's principal city. The Kuopio Market Place is a great way to sample the local culture and fresh produce, while the revolving restaurant atop Kuopio's Puijo Tower offers a unique dining experience. During the summer Northern Savonia is abuzz with international music, dance and wine festivals. Make sure you try the mouth watering Savo speciality, kalakukko (fish pie) as well as kotikalja, a homemade non-alcoholic ale. Strawberry lovers shouldn't miss the oldest summer festival in Finland, the Suonenjoki Strawberry Carnival.
