Kerkyra, Corfu, (East coast of Corfu), Greece
The architecture, the palaces, the narrow streets, the old mansions, and the Venetian fortresses are the components that make up the palette of the Old Town. Every corner has a story. The entire old town is a UNESCO monument. A walk through the old town gives the impression that the visitor is in a large open-air museum.Spianada: It is the largest square in the Balkans and one of the largest squares in Europe. A large tree-lined square is a meeting and recreation point for the people of Corfu. In this square the famous Easter custom of throwing the Botides (Clay Pots) takes place. Part of the square on the northwest side is the imposing Liston, one of the island’s most central and famous points with its imposing arches. Its construction lasted several decades and it was designed based on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. The meeting and walking area connect the palace with the main square. On the ground floors below the chambers, there are café bars, which extend their tables and seats onto the square, where you can enjoy the coolness and the wonderful view of the Palace and the fortress while having a drink or a snack. Behind the streets in Liston is the road that leads to the most famous church on the island, Agios Spyridon.
Porta Remounda: At the height of Spianada behind the houses, you come across Porta Remounda. The area of Porta Remounda used to be one of the four gates that served as an entrance to the old town of Corfu in the past. The area is built on a hill and slopes down to the Town Hall Square and is a district with a fairly regular structure and characteristic streets like Guildford, along which you will find excellent restaurants and small shops.
Town Hall Square: The end of the Porta Remounda district leads to the Town Hall Square or San Giacomo Square, where the historic building of the old Town Hall of Corfu is located. It was built in 1691 and it was the place where the Club of the Venetian nobles of Corfu gathered. Later it was converted into a theater, the first modern theater established in Greece, attracting musicians and composers from Corfu and Italy, and exerting a great influence on culture.
Kremastis Square: Inside the picturesque narrow streets of Campiello behind the old port, the road leads to Kremastis Square. It took its name from the old church, Panagia Kremastis. It is a Heptanisian-type temple, built before the 16th century. Outside the church, a small lantern is hung in front of an icon of the Virgin Mary and it is always lit in the evening hours. In the center of the square the Venetian well is located, one of the nine water tanks built by the Venetians and it dates back to 1699. The well is an architectural historical masterpiece, made of marble, with a unique design inspired by the Venetian culture of the 17th century.
Admire the elegant architecture of Spianada Square, the largest square in Greece, or wander through the vibrant markets and artisan shops. With its rich cultural heritage and vibrant atmosphere, Corfu Town offers a truly unforgettable experience.
